Cigar Humidors Cigar humidors are where any cigar fan worth his salt stores his cigars. If you have a few cigar humidors in your home – one for the foyer, one for the study, one for the dining room – that’s a sure sign your collection of cigar accessories is nearing completion. Cigar humidors are special boxes for keeping your cigars properly moistened so that they don’t rot. There is no limit to how long a premium cigar can be aged, as long as cigar humidors are in the equation. Cigar humidors come in all sizes, from capacities of one cigar to gigantic warehouses converted into cigar humidors. Standard cigar humidors for your home or office usually hold a few dozen cigars. These cigar humidors are most often made of moisture-loving Spanish cedar wood and equipped with a hygrometer for keeping the humidity levels at or around 70%. Any lower than 68% humidity, and your cigars may rot. Any higher than 72% humidity and you’re inviting tobacco beetles. Tobacco beetles will eat your fine cigars to kingdom come. Cigar humidors, as mentioned, are usually pre-equipped with a hygrometer. A hygrometer is kind of like a thermometer, but instead of measuring temperature, they measure humidity levels inside cigar humidors (and other places). Some cigar humidors don’t come with one of these, so be sure to check that out and buy a separate hygrometer. They’re not fancy looking. Often they look like a dial inside a disc the size of a silver dollar, although some are digital. Cigar humidors need to be pre-treated for maximum effect. Just wipe it out, set a small container of water inside, and leave it overnight. Do that every night for each of your cigar humidors until the water level no longer decreases. Then you know the wood is saturated and ready to keep your cigars in great shape for, potentially, many decades. |
